1864 Lapstone Hill
Confirmation of Safe Receipt of Letter and Enclosures
Recovered from Lapstone Hill, NSW, Mail Robbery
On 14 August 1864 the mail coach from Mudgee to Bathurst was held up near Mount Victoria by three masked men, George Gibson, John Ellis and George Brown. The mail, comprising over 1,000 letters, was ransacked and all valuables removed.
All three bushrangers were caught in 1866 in Queensland. Ellis and Brown were imprisoned and Gibson was hanged for a murder on 20 May 1865.
